A rare piece of non-SF, written for a creative writing class. I'm reasonably happy with the way it turned out, especially the ambiguous conclusion. Having a first-person narrator fail to understand things that are (hopefully) apparent to the reader is difficult, but I like it a lot when it works. Lolita is of coursethe classic example of the technique, and this is my own poor attempt at it.
